Introduction

Choose the right session backend based on your performance and reliability needs.

Key Concepts

Database Backend: Default, stores in DB.

Cache Backend: Fast, stores in Redis/Memcached.

Real World Context

A high-traffic news site with 10,000 concurrent users switched from database sessions to Redis-backed cache sessions and reduced average response time by 40ms per request. The cached_db backend is a good middle ground: reads hit Redis, but writes also persist to the database so sessions survive a Redis restart.

Deep Dive

Backend Comparison

python
# Database (default) - reliable but slower
SESSION_ENGINE = 'django.contrib.sessions.backends.db'

# Cache - fastest, may lose sessions on restart
SESSION_ENGINE = 'django.contrib.sessions.backends.cache'

# Cached DB - fast reads, reliable writes
SESSION_ENGINE = 'django.contrib.sessions.backends.cached_db'

# Signed cookies - no server storage, limited size
SESSION_ENGINE = 'django.contrib.sessions.backends.signed_cookies'

Redis Sessions

python
# pip install django-redis

CACHES = {
    'default': {
        'BACKEND': 'django_redis.cache.RedisCache',
        'LOCATION': 'redis://127.0.0.1:6379/1',
    }
}

SESSION_ENGINE = 'django.contrib.sessions.backends.cache'
SESSION_CACHE_ALIAS = 'default'

Common Pitfalls

  1. Using cache backend without persistent cache: If Redis or Memcached restarts, all sessions are lost and every user is logged out. Use cached_db if you cannot guarantee cache persistence.
  2. Using signed_cookies for sensitive data: Cookie sessions are stored client-side. They are signed (tamper-proof) but not encrypted -- users can decode and read the session contents.
  3. Forgetting clearsessions management command: Database-backed sessions accumulate expired rows. Without a periodic cron job running manage.py clearsessions, the session table grows indefinitely.

Best Practices

  1. Use cached_db for production: Balance of speed and reliability.
  2. Use Redis with persistence: Prevent session loss.

Summary

Cache backend is fastest. Cached_db balances speed and reliability. Redis is the best production choice.
